Trigeminal neuralgia (TN), is a condition of excruciating facial pain coming from compression of the trigeminal nerve, which starts near the top of the ear and splits in three, toward the eye, cheek and jaw. It may involve one, two or rarely all three branches of the nerve and infrequently occurs on both sides of the face. Those suffering from this condition report episodes of severe, shooting or jabbing pain that may feel like an electric shock.
Having trigeminal neuralgia doesn’t necessarily mean you have to live in pain. To treat this condition, your doctor usually will prescribe medications to lessen or block the pain signals sent to your brain. If medications are not effective, or side effects of the medications are unacceptable, surgical treatment may be considered.
