“THIS IS A LONG REVIEW BUT A MUST READ, I CANNOT EXPRESS THE GRATITUDE I HAVE AND OWE TO DR. DARAKCHIEV AND HIS ENTIRE TEAM!

I am one that is typically not known for being lost for words but today I was struggling to get the cadence right on what I want to be not only a meaningful review but a review that expresses my profound gratitude to a man that saved my life.

As they say, “life turns on a dime” and mine certainly did over the spring and summer of 2022. I experienced a rapid deterioration of my everyday lifestyle. It began with some numbness and tingling in my hands followed by a change in my gait and steadiness to walk. I then began to start thinking the worst, surely this was not just a simple back issue. I was at our home in Florida and immediately ran to a local Orthopedic practice and met a young Doctor who immediately ran some tests. The standard battery of X rays, MRI’s, EMGs, and some other tests I never heard of. The Dr. immediately came into my wife and I and with a very concerned look on his face told us he needed to schedule me for surgery STAT. We were both naturally taken back and overcome a bit by his sense of urgency but did not doubt what he was saying as his diagnosis seemed to be in concert with how I was feeling. This decision was one that I needed to consider and honestly get a second opinion. My wife and I were scheduled to head back to NY for a family event and I wanted to seek that “second opinion” in NY. We did our research, or should I say my wife did and since she is quite tenacious, thorough, and extremely smart we felt well-armed to progress towards that second opinion journey.

With all the research and only the best of intentions to seek out this second opinion in NY my condition began to rapidly go downhill. The family event we came back for was not meant to be either and on the morning of October 24th I found myself in the Emergency Room at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip New York.

I was then introduced shortly thereafter to the man who would save my life, Dr. Borimir Darakchiev a Neurosurgeon on staff at CHS.
I do not know how one can put into words the gratitude for someone saving one’s life, but I will do my best.

Dr. Darakchiev immediately took charge of the situation and the world that was moving so quickly in front of me began to slow down, I felt a calm cover over me. I knew this was not going to be just an ordinary procedure, certainly not for me but as things began to quickly unfold, I sensed it was somewhat ordinary for this Dr. who came into my life from not the Emergency Room door at Good Samaritan Hospital but from a higher place and honestly, my wife and I feel he was sent to us by “God”. I believe nothing is truly by coincidence.

The expediency of moving me into the system and getting me scheduled for surgery the very next day was impressive. The ER nursing teams, the imaging department and then once on 3 South the entire staff were all second to none.

It is now Tuesday morning the 25th of October, and I am in my room waiting to undergo a procedure, an Anterior, Cervical Decompression with a fusion across C3, C4 and C5. I was thoroughly briefed by Dr. Darakchiev and I was honestly quite anxious, but Dr. Darakchiev put my mind at ease, and I knew I was in great hands. I then remember being taken to the operating room with a quick stop in what seemed to be a pre-operating room environment. I had a quick consult with the anesthesiologist and several other incredible nurses and doctors and then off to the main event.

The next thing I remember was being awakened in recovery and taken to my room. I had no pain whatsoever, no discomfort and the issues that brought me to the emergency room, unable to walk, numbness in my extremities and a rapid decline of my health was already behind me. I cannot say enough for how blessed I was to encounter Dr. Darakchiev.
