The nagging ache in your lower back may not be just “getting old.” Spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal, can compress nerves and cause pain, numbness, and weakness in your legs. While age is a significant factor, other less obvious contributors can increase your risk.

As we age, our intervertebral discs (the cushions between our vertebrae) naturally lose water and height. This can lead to bone spurs and thickened ligaments, narrowing the spinal canal. Some people inherit a predisposition to develop spinal stenosis due to their spinal anatomy.

Previous back Injuries like fractures or disc herniations can damage spinal structures, increasing the risk of stenosis later. Repetitive strain and jobs or activities requiring frequent lifting, bending, or twisting can put repetitive stress on the spine, contributing to wear and tear.

Excess weight adds pressure on the spine, accelerating disc degeneration and stenosis development. Smoking restricts blood flow to the spine, hindering disc health and increasing the risk of stenosis.

Early diagnosis and management are necessary for managing spinal stenosis effectively. If you experience persistent back pain, especially radiating down your legs, give us a call.
