Sciatica is a common condition that causes pain, numbness, and tingling in the leg. It is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which is the longest nerve in the body. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back, through the buttocks, and down the back of each leg.  There are many myths about sciatica. Here are a few of the most common ones, debunked:

Myth: Sciatica is always caused by a herniated disc.
Fact: While a herniated disc is a common cause of sciatica, it is not the only cause. Other causes include spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and muscle strain.

Myth: Sciatica is a serious condition that requires surgery.
Fact: Most cases of sciatica can be treated with non-surgical methods, such as physical therapy, medication, and injections. Surgery is typically reserved for severe cases that have not responded to other treatments.

Myth: Sciatica is a sign that you have arthritis.
Fact: While arthritis can cause sciatica, it is not the only cause. Sciatica can also be caused by other conditions, such as a herniated disc or spinal stenosis.

Myth: Sciatica is only caused by things you do wrong.
Fact: While some activities, such as heavy lifting, can increase your risk of sciatica, it is not always caused by something you did wrong. Sciatica can also be caused by natural wear and tear on the spine or by underlying medical conditions.
