Many of my patients enjoy hiking, especially on Long Island’s many nature trails. It’s a fantastic way to improve overall health and well-being, especially for spinal health.
Hiking provides a low-impact cardiovascular workout that strengthens the muscles surrounding the spine, improving stability and reducing the risk of injury. The rhythmic motion of walking engages the core muscles, promoting proper spinal alignment and flexibility.
To prevent injuries while hiking, it’s important to wear well-fitting hiking boots with adequate ankle support and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your hikes. Be extra cautious when hiking on uneven terrain. Consider using trekking poles. They can provide stability and balance, especially on steep slopes or jagged courses. They can also reduce pressure on your knees and back.
