As a neurosurgeon and an avid tennis player, I have a unique perspective on the sport. While tennis is a fantastic way to stay active and have fun, there are some risks involved, especially for your back and head.

Your lower back is the powerhouse behind your tennis serve, forehand, and backhand. Unfortunately, repetitive twisting, bending, and jumping can lead to lower back strain, the most common culprit often from overuse or improper technique. Disc problems can also arise, ranging from mild discomfort to debilitating pain. Additionally, inflammation in the small joints of the spine, known as facet joint syndrome, can cause stiffness and pain. While less frequent than in contact sports, head injuries can occur in tennis. A sudden fall, a collision with another player, or even a stray ball can result in a concussion.

To protect your spine and head, remember to warm up and cool down to prepare your body for the game and help it recover afterward. Mastering your technique reduces strain on your body, and strengthening your core supports your spine. As always, listen to your body and enjoy the game!
