Spring is in full bloom, and it’s time for a little spring cleaning! Here are some tips to keep your spine happy while you freshen up your space.

First and foremost: don’t try to tackle everything at once. Spread out cleaning tasks over several days instead of cramming them all into one weekend. Take frequent breaks to stretch and rest your back muscles. If a task is causing pain, stop and ask for help. Enlist family members or friends to tackle heavy lifting or awkward positions.

Invest in ergonomic cleaning tools like lightweight vacuums with adjustable handles or long-handled dusters to reduce reaching and bending.

Whether you’re vacuuming or reaching into those high shelves, maintain a straight back and bend from your knees instead of your waist. This reduces strain on your lower back. When vacuuming or mopping, keep the tool close to your body. This prevents slouching and reduces stress on your back muscles. Use a lunging motion to reach further instead of bending over at the waist.

When lifting heavy objects like storage boxes, bend your knees and use your legs to lift rather than straining your back.

When decluttering your closet, start with the lower shelves and work your way up to avoid excessive bending and reaching. Use a sturdy step stool for higher shelves.

Remember, taking care of your spine is just as important as tidying up your home. Happy cleaning, everyone!
