Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of arthritis that affects the spine. It can cause inflammation and pain in the joints of the spine, as well as in the joints of the hips and shoulders. Over time, AS can cause the spine to fuse, making it difficult to move.
Causes:
The exact cause of AS is unknown, but it is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Other factors that may contribute to AS include smoking, infections, and trauma.
The most common symptom of AS is pain and stiffness in the lower back. The pain is often worse in the morning and after periods of inactivity. Other symptoms may include:
• Fatigue
• Neck pain
• Hip and shoulder pain
• Eye problems
• Chest pain
• Shortness of breath
There is no cure for AS, but there are treatments that can help to relieve pain and stiffness, and slow the progression of the disease, such as over the counter pain relievers to help pain and inflammation and physical therapy to help improve range of motion and flexibility. Surgery may be an option for people with severe AS that is not responding to other treatments.
As a neurosurgeon, I specialize in treating conditions of the brain and spine. If you have AS, I can work with you to develop a treatment plan that is right for you.
