The fall season is a time for many activities, such as raking leaves, cleaning gutters, and moving firewood. However, these activities can also put you at risk for back injuries.
Here are some tips on how to prevent back injuries this season:
- Warm up before starting any activity. A few minutes of light stretching can help to loosen up your muscles and prepare them for activity.
- Use proper lifting techniques. When lifting heavy objects, bend at the knees, not the waist. Keep your back straight and use your legs and knees to lift.
- Don’t lift more than you can handle. If an object is too heavy, ask for help.
- Take breaks. Don’t try to do everything in one day. Take breaks throughout your day to rest your back.
- Be careful when walking on slippery surfaces. Wear shoes with good traction and be aware of your surroundings.
Here are some additional tips for specific fall household chores:
- Raking leaves: Use a lightweight rake and take breaks often. Avoid raking over uneven surfaces.
- Cleaning gutters: Use a sturdy ladder and be careful not to overreach. If you are cleaning high gutters, use a gutter scoop or other long-handled tool.
- Moving firewood: Stack firewood in small loads that you can lift safely. Use a wheelbarrow or other tool to move heavy loads of firewood.
If you do experience back pain and the pain is severe or does not improve after a few days, see a doctor.
