Here are 5 key things you can do to help achieve more comfort and pain relief from back pain.

  • Check your mattress. While you’re lying down, your back has an opportunity to relax. Choose a mattress that will support your spine. An older or soft mattress will allow your spine to sag, aggravating back pain. If you’re a back sleeper, try placing a pillow beneath your knees to reduce the stress on your lower back. If you are a side sleeper, try placing a pillow between the knees to balance your hips.
  • Exercise your core to strengthen your abdominal and back muscles. They need to be strong to support your spine and eliminate pressure on your back.
  • Wear shoes that provide a supportive base to help your body and spine stay in alignment. Your shoes need to support your spine. Consider using orthotics or inserts if you find you need more support.
  • Get a back massage. A massage can have many therapeutic benefits, such as loosening tight muscles, increasing blood flow and promoting relaxation.
  • Long periods of sitting can create or aggravate back pain. Choose the right office chair and practice good posture while seated. Get up to stretch and walk around at least once an hour. Remember movement fuels the spine.
