Compression fractures, tiny cracks in the bones of your spine or vertebra, occur when the blocks of the spinal cord collapse. They typically form in your mid or lower back and can affect one or more vertebrae, causing pain and limited mobility. The cracks can happen so gradually that the pain is relatively mild or unnoticeable.

The main symptom is back pain, which can start gradually and get worse over time, sometimes occurring suddenly. Some people with spinal compression fractures will feel almost no symptoms, while others may develop a chronic backache.
A common cause of compression fractures is osteoporosis. Another cause is metastatic disease which refers to the spread of cancer cells into other areas of the body.
Treatments may include:
  • Medication
  • Rest
  • A back brace
  • Physical therapy
Sometimes, surgery is required. Common surgical procedures for spinal compression fractures are lumbar fusion and vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty.
