A spinal cyst is a fluid-filled sac that develops along the spine. These cysts are benign and typically develop as a result of degenerative changes that occur with aging. They can be found throughout the spine but are most common in the lumbar region (low back).
Depending on the size and location of the cyst, symptoms may be similar to those of spinal stenosis, including:
• pain in the lower back
• pain in one or both legs
• pain that radiates down the back of the leg and to the feet
• painful cramping in the legs
• numbness or tingling in one or both legs
• increased pain and symptoms when standing that is relieved when sitting
A spinal cyst is best seen with an MRI. Other imaging tests like an X-ray or ultrasound may also be able to detect the cyst.
Conservative treatments for cysts may include rest, anti-inflammatory medications, steroid injections and drainage. However, if these approaches fail to provide sufficient relief from discomfort and impaired movement, surgery might be recommended as a potential solution.
